How the drill works
In this free-kick set-piece routine from the right side of the field, the aim is to draw the opponent into pressing before exploiting space with a switch and cross. The play begins with a short pass backward from the free-kick taker to a supporting teammate positioned slightly deeper. This triggers the defending team to step up and press, anticipating a buildup. As the press begins, the deeper player immediately executes a long diagonal switch to the opposite side of the field where a wide player is ready in space. This player controls the ball and delivers an early cross into the box, targeting runners who have already timed their movement toward goal. The cross should arrive just as the attackers reach the danger area, aiming for a first-time finish or a well-placed header.
kcp This routine relies on precise timing, awareness of pressing triggers, and quick execution to catch the defense unbalanced and exposed on the far side.
